Surgery
So the time had come. I was to be at Sophiahemmet at 0930 for surgery. It was with mixed emotions I got out of bed to get ready to go to the hospital. I'm not worried about surgery nor about going to the hospital. The feeling was more along the lines of eagerness.
There was the time before surgery, counting down, not being able to start re-construction, not being able to participate, to train, etc. Now I was approaching zero time, after which I'd be able to start counting the days until I could begin by rehab.
I got to the hospital around 0900, so I had plenty of time. The nurses were friendly. I got assigned two nurses, one regular, and one trainee. They did the normal pre-surgery procedures, including asking me health related questions, giving me anti-biotics, mild painkillers, etc. It was a really slow day. Waiting. Waiting. Waiting. The time slide didn't bother me that much, but the hunger was really getting to me!
The hours went by and at around 1200, the nurses came into the room where I was waiting for surgery and told me it was going to be my turn very soon. Around 1230 I was wheeled downstairs and then the preparations began. Pills, talks with doctors, more pills, talks with more doctors and then the OR.
When I woke up, it was all over. I don't even remember the "Count backwards from ten ..." procedure, ha ha. And I have zero memories of the surgeon talking to me when I woke up. Fortunately, he also came by later when most of the fog had left.
The one thing I do remember from the wake-up is HUNGER! I was told that if I didn't feel sick after another 30-60 minutes, I would be given food. So I was given food, and it tasted wonderful!
The surgery went well by all accounts, so given a few days, I can start counting! Finally!
